How to take out an electric bike on trial

If you fancy trialling an electric bike to experience the benefits first-hand and discover if electric is for you, then just follow these easy steps

  • 1 Enter your postcode into the E-Bike Trial Finder to find your nearest trial store.
  • 2 Choose your local store and browse the electric bikes that are available.
  • 3 Select the electric bike you'd like to try and book a day that suits you.
  • 4 Continue through the checkout process to confirm and finalise your booking.
  • 5 Visit the store on the day of your booking to collect your bike. Don't forget to bring 2 forms of ID with you, including one photo ID.
  • 5 Pay the refundable £101 deposit and before you set off a colleague will talk you through how to use the electric bike and will size it up for you. (Please note, we are unable to provide you with a helmet, but we do advise that you wear one while riding your trial e-bike).
Returning your Trial Electric Bike

We hope you’ve enjoyed your time trialling an electric bike! Here’s what you need to do when it's time for the trial bike to be returned.

  • 1 Clean off any excess mud or dirt from the trial electric bike.
  • 2 Return the bike to the store that you collected it from by the time stated.
  • 3 A colleague will check over the bike to ensure that everything is as it should be.
  • 4 If you’d like to purchase an electric bike of your own, your deposit amount will be deducted from the bill. Alternatively, the deposit amount will be refunded to the card that you paid it with.

We have partnered with community navigation app, Komoot, to provide 75 bespoke cycling routes from Halfords stores offering electric bike trials across the UK and Ireland. All routes are mapped perfectly to be within the allotted six hours for each trial.

Riders can select routes that cover all types of terrain: roads, gravel, trails, bridleways, hills, and incorporate spectacular scenery and landmarks.

Yes, we have a range of electric bikes you can take out on trial. The bikes available cover a range of disciplines and sizes to cover all needs.
You can find your local electric bike trial store by clicking here where you can enter your postcode.
You will be required to pay a £101 deposit by credit or debit card which is payable when you go into store to collect your trial electric bike. This will be fully refunded when the bike has been returned at the end of the trial period, or alternatively it can be used towards the cost of a bike that you purchase.
Our trial bikes are not for sale, but you will be able to order the exact same model of electric bike taken out on trial. (subject to availability at that time)
The standard length of the electric bike trials is 6 hours. If you would like to trial the bike for longer, please speak to a colleague when in store. (this is subject to diary availability and cannot be guaranteed)
Your deposit will be returned onto the same card that you initially paid with. We are unable to refund the deposit as cash or onto another card. Please note, refunds may take up to 5 working days to process.
On the day of your electric bike trial you will need to provide valid proof of identity and proof of residence.
Acceptable personal identification documents include:
  • Current passport
  • UK or European Full or Provisional photo-card driving licence
  • National ID card
Acceptable documents providing proof of residence include:
  • Recent utility bill (e.g. gas, electricity, phone)
  • UK full or provisional driving licence (if not already presented as personal ID document)
  • Financial statement (e.g. bank, building society, credit card) containing current address
  • Most recent mortgage statement from a recognised lender
The dates on any documents used to provide proof of residence should be within the last 3 months and must contain the name and address.
We hope you enjoy many miles of trouble free cycling, however if a fault develops during your ride then please return the bike to your local store. Where possible, a colleague will provide you with an alternative trial e-bike. If all e-bikes are out on trial the colleague will reschedule your booking for another date.
We only have a limited number of electric trial bikes available per store so there may be instances when we are fully booked. You can try to book for an alternative date or you can try searching in another store by clicking here and entering your postcode to show all local stores.
We are currently rolling out this service to 336 of our stores across the UK. There are stores launching the trial each week, so please check back again to see if a store near you has been added to the trial.
No, we are currently only offering a selection of electric bikes out on trial at the moment.
We hope you enjoy many miles of trouble free cycling, however whilst the electric bike is in your possession, you are responsible for it so please take care of it. If the bike is damaged, lost or stolen during the trial, we reserve the right to keep your deposit (and to charge you for the balance of the cost of the bike). If you are in an accident involving the bike, Halfords accepts no liability for any damage or injury which may be caused to you or any third party except to the extent this cannot be limited by law.
Please arrive 10 minutes before your trial booking time so that we can process your bike for you. We want to ensure everyone is safe and receives the relevant safety information and bike sizing, this could result in some small delays to your collection.
Trial electric bikes should be returned to the same store that it was collected from. The colleague will specify the time when it needs to be returned by but all bikes will need to be returned on the same day.
For security reasons, the deposit amount must be paid using one single bank/credit card and chip and pin must be used. Please also note, Apple Pay will not be accepted.
If you are unfortunate enough to get a puncture whilst trialling your e-bike please return the bike to your local store. Where possible, a colleague will provide you with an alternative trial e-bike. If all e-bikes are out on trial the colleague will reschedule your booking for another date.
You can trial your e-bike wherever you choose, however we recommend cycling somewhere that is familiar to you and on land that you are legally allowed to cycle on. Please also remember that our bikes are not designed for use on particularly rough ground such as mountain bike trail centres so please avoid such areas to avoid injury and/or damage to the bike.
You are not permitted to ride the test electric bike on any mountain bike trails as designated by the British Cycling MTB Trail Grading System
When you receive your trial e-bike it will be fully charged. This charge should be sufficient for the length of the trial.
We do not provide any additional equipment with the trial electric bike. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the necessary equipment to trial your e-bike safely.
You can take your electric bike out in any weather condition, just make sure you clean it off before returning to store.
We understand that you may encounter some delays when trying to return your trial electric bike. Please contact your local store if this does happen so that they are aware. Failure to bring your trial e-bike back by the stated time could result in you forfeiting your deposit.
We appreciate that your electric bike is likely to pick up some dirt whilst you have it on trial and we will be checking over and cleaning all bikes after each use. However, we do kindly ask that you remove any excess mud or dirt prior to returning your trial electric bike to our stores.

Customer ("you")

"Conditions" means these terms and conditions

"Declaration Form" means the customer declaration form setting out your details and the details of the E-Bike you have hired;

"Deposit" means the deposit amount of £101.00;

"E-Bike" means an electric powered bicycle offered as part of the Scheme;

"Rental Period" means the period of hire set out in paragraph 2;

"Scheme" means the scheme to provide E-Bikes to customers on a trial basis;

  1. E-Bike Hire
    1. We will hire an E-Bike of your choice to you subject to these Conditions.
    2. You shall not, other than in the exercise of your rights under these Conditions or applicable law, interfere with our quiet possession of the E-Bike.
  2. Rental Period
    1. The Rental Period starts on the date and time set out on the Declaration Form and shall end on the date and time set out on the Declaration Form or when you return the E-Bike to us, whichever is sooner.
  3. Deposit
    1. The Deposit is a deposit against any loss of or damage caused to the E-Bike. You shall, at the beginning of the Rental Period, pay the Deposit to us by credit or debit card. If you fail to return the E-Bike at the end of the Rental Period (including returning the E-Bike late) or cause any loss or damage to the E-Bike (in whole or in part), we shall be entitled to apply the Deposit against such default, loss or damage.
    2. Provided you return the E-Bike by the end of the Rental Period, we will refund the Deposit to you using the same payment method from which it was deducted within five (5) Business days of the end of the Rental Period.
    3. If you choose to purchase an electric powered bicycle or any other products from us at the end of the Rental Period, we will, with your consent, apply the Deposit to the cost of that purchase. If your purchase is less than the amount of the Deposit, we will return the balance to you in accordance with clause 3.2.
  4. Title and Risk
    1. The E-Bike shall at all times remain our property, and you shall have no right, title or interest in or to the E-Bike (save the right to possession and use of the E-Bike subject to these Conditions).
    2. The risk of loss, theft, damage or destruction of the E-Bike shall pass to you on delivery (which shall mean the point at which you take physical possession of the E-Bike prior to leaving our store). The E-Bike shall remain at your sole risk during the Rental Period and any further term during which the E-Bike is in your possession, custody or control (the "Risk Period") until such time as the E-Bike is redelivered to us.
  5. Your Responsibilities
    1. You shall during the term of these Conditions:
      1. ensure that the E-Bike is kept and operated in a suitable environment, used only for the purposes for which it is designed, and operated in a proper manner in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and any operating instructions;
      2. not use the E-Bike on any mountain bike trails as designated by the British Cycling MTB Trail Grading System, and not use the E-Bike on any other terrain which might constitute a risk to the integrity of the E-Bike and/or the safety of you or any third parties;
      3. take such steps (including compliance with all safety and usage instructions we provide) as may be necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the E-Bike is at all times safe and without risk to health when it is being used;
      4. make no alterations to the E-Bike and shall not remove any existing component(s) from the E-Bike;
      5. not part with control of, sell or offer for sale, underlet or lend the E-Bike or allow the creation of any mortgage, charge, lien or other security interest in respect of it;
      6. not do or permit to be done any act or thing which will or may jeopardise our right, title or interest in the E-Bike;
      7. not use the E-Bike for any unlawful purpose;
      8. deliver up the E-Bike at the end of the Rental Period or on earlier termination of these Conditions at the same address from which the E-Bike was hired;
      9. not do or permit to be done anything which could invalidate any insurance policy we may have in respect of the E-Bike.
    2. You acknowledge that we shall not be responsible for any loss of or damage to the E-Bike or damage to any third party property arising from your use of the E-Bike, whether or not such loss or damage was caused by your negligence, misuse or mishandling of the E-Bike.
    3. You acknowledge that we shall not be responsible for any personal injury to yourself or any third party arising from your use of the E-Bike, whether or not such loss or damage was caused by your negligence, misuse or mishandling of the E-Bike.
  6. Warranty
    1. We warrant that the E-Bike shall substantially confirm to its specification, be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.
    2. Insofar as the E-Bike was not manufactured or produced by us, you shall be entitled only to such warranty or other benefit as we have received from the manufacturer.
  7. Limitation of Liability
    1. The restrictions on liability in this paragraph 7 apply to every liability arising under or in connection with these Conditions including liability in contract, tort (including negligence), misrepresentation, restitution or otherwise.
    2. Nothing in these Conditions limits any liability which cannot legally be limited including liability for:
      1. death or personal injury caused by negligence;
      2. fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or
      3. any matter in respect of which it would be unlawful for the parties to exclude or restrict liability.
    3. Subject to paragraph 7.2, we shall not be liable to you under these Conditions for any loss of profits, loss of sales or business, loss of agreements or contracts, loss of anticipated savings, and/or indirect or consequential loss.
  8. Termination
    1. These Conditions shall automatically terminate upon your return of the E-Bike or the end of the Rental Period, whichever is earlier.
    2. On termination of these Conditions, our consent to your possession of the E-Bike shall terminate, and we may, by our authorised representatives, retake possession of the E-Bike.
    3. If you have not returned the E-Bike when these Conditions terminate, we shall be entitled to retain the Deposit and to charge to the credit or debit card used to pay the Deposit the balance of the full retail price of the E-Bike.
    4. Any provision of these Conditions that expressly or by implication is intended to come into or continue in force on or after termination of these Conditions shall remain in full force and effect.
  9. General Terms
    1. We may transfer our rights and obligations under these Conditions to another organisation, but this will not affect your rights or our obligations under these Conditions.
    2. You may not transfer any of your rights or your obligations under these Conditions to any other person.
    3. These Conditions are between you and us. No other person shall have any rights to enforce any of its terms.
    4. Each of the paragraphs and sub-paragraphs of these Conditions operates separately. If any court or relevant authority decides that any of them are unlawful or unenforceable, the remaining paragraphs will remain in full force and effect.
    5. If we fail to insist that you perform any of your obligations under these Conditions, or if we do not enforce our rights against you, or if we delay in doing so, that will not mean that we have waived our rights against you and will not mean that you do not have to comply with those obligations. If we do waive a default by you, we will only do so in writing, and that will not mean that we will automatically waive any later default by you.
    6. These Conditions are governed by English law. You and we both agree that the courts of England and Wales will have non-exclusive jurisdiction. However, if you are a resident of Northern Ireland you may also bring proceedings in Northern Ireland, and if you are a resident of Scotland, you may also bring proceedings in Scotland. The only language in which these Conditions can be concluded is English.
