About this ebook

NOW THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES—THE MASTERPIECE THAT BECAME A CULTURAL PHENOMENON

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

I first thought it would be boring and predictable to read the books as I have seen HBO's adaptation. However, the depth and pure amount of characters and storylines, made the reading an interesting and necessary one to fully understand what's going on. I got a lot of details and explanations I didn't catch or that weren't on the TV show. Gonna buy the next one as well.

This is a great story. The problem is he has to describe everything and I mean everything way too much. I expected him to start writing about what type of grass the horses were eating and how they were chewing it. Just tell the story and get over the need to tell me everything they had on the table to eat, or describe every flag flying on the field of battle, or every detail of the armor worn by anybody that has it on. I trudged through this because of the story. About half way through I started to skip pages of crap to get back to the story. That is not how I like to have to read a book.

I'm one of the few people left in the world without HBO so it has been painful for me to hear so many rave about a great fantasy epic that I couldn't experience myself. I'm glad, however, that I decided to read the series rather than hold out for the videos to show up on Netflix (or steal it). The characters are bold yet the author is bolder and has no fear of delivering their fates through plot twists and human struggles. Gripping.
